New guidelines to support greater safety for workers and people near construction sites

Transport for NSW is pleased to announce the release of an updated handbook that provides practical guidance on temporary traffic management at all Transport road work and maintenance sites.

David Lance, A/Standards and Innovation Senior Manager, Transport for NSW said the purpose of the Traffic Control at Work Sites Technical Manual (TCAWS) is to serve as a key reference to frontline teams in managing the health and safety of workers and contractors, as well as the public.

“Working near traffic is one of the highest risks for TfNSW and our goal is to be the leader in temporary traffic management and for all traffic control workers to know that their safety is at our heart,” he said.

This latest version of TCAWS has been updated to place greater focus on traffic management planning, and where practical, harmonisation with national standards.

Some of the key changes in the manual that support the safety of road workers and users include the use of:

·       30km speed zones as control options when workers on foot are within 1.5 metres of live traffic

·       Multi-messaging signs

·       Portable traffic control devices.

To enable Transport work sites to achieve compliance to Issue 6, from its publication date of 13 November 2020 until 13 May 2021, Version 5 will remain available for reference. Requirements of Issue 6 will become mandatory from 13 May 2021.
