Purpose of the Excellence Awards

The Traffic Management Association of Australia (TMAA)'s vision is to create a safe and zero harm traffic management industry across the country.

TMAA's Excellence Awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by individuals and organisations to the Traffic Management sector. These awards provide the opportunity to showcase excellence, innovation and achievements in temporary traffic management projects and the individuals involved.

• 25 September 2023 Nominations open.
• 8 November 2023, 12pm AEDT, Deadline to submit nominations online.
• Mid-November to Mid-December 2023 State finalists announced.
• 7 February 2024 Video submission closing date for all finalists.
• 15 March 2024 Winners announced at the Awards Dinner

Nominations must be lodged on the TMAA website by the above closing date. Submissions received after this date or not lodged on the TMAA website will not be considered. 

Only nominations (co)authorised and (co)submitted by a TMAA member company will be accepted.

Judging Process

Members of the Judging panel are independent of TMAA Ordinary member companies and the TMAA Board. After nominations close, all valid nominations are forwarded to the judging panel. Judges will review all nominations and may choose to contact nominees directly to ask further questions or clarify responses. 

Judges score the nominations. The top score in each state will be announced as the finalists. State finalists will be advised directly and announced on the TMAA website and  social media channels.

All State finalists must submit a video (up to 2 minutes) – the video will introduce the finalist, their achievements and their workplace; and assist the judging panel in make a final decision for the National Winner. Finalists videos will be shown at the Annual Conference Gala Dinner and on TMAA website and social media channels. National Winners will be announced at the Annual Conference Gala Dinner.

National Traffic Controller of the Year

 This Award is proudly sponsored by Kennards Hire.

The National Traffic Controller of the Year Award is an annual award given out by TMAA to recognise excellence and outstanding service by traffic controllers across the country. The award highlights traffic controllers who go above and beyond their duties to ensure roadwork sites are safe for both workers and all road users.

The winner of the National Traffic Controller of the Year Award receives a trophy and prize money ($2,500), along with industry-wide recognition. The Award brings prestige to individuals and companies, while promoting safety and talent in this essential industry.

Eligibility:  To be eligible for the National Traffic Controller of the Year Award, nominees must have been employed as a Traffic Controller for a minimum of 12 months, be a currently certified traffic controllers employed by an accredited traffic management company that is a member of TMAA. They should demonstrate best practices in traffic control, including excellent communication skills, attentiveness on site, compliance with safety regulations, and commitment to professional development. Ideally, nominees are passionate about the traffic control industry and committed to raising its standards across Australia. Traffic Control companies can nominate as many traffic controllers as they like.

Indigenous Traffic Controller of the Year

This Award is proudly sponsored by the Victoria State Government, Department of Transport and Planning

The Indigenous Traffic Controller of the Year Award is an annual award given out by TMAA to recognise outstanding service and contribution from Indigenous traffic controllers across the country. By highlighting top Indigenous talent, TMAA hopes to encourage more participation and greater representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the traffic management sector. 

The winner of the Indigenous Traffic Controller of the Year Award receives a trophy and prize money ($1,500), along with industry-wide recognition.  The award aligns with TMAA's commitment to reconciliation and creating an inclusive industry that values the contributions of Indigenous Australians.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Award, the traffic controller must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. They must have been employed as a Traffic Controller for a minimum of 12 months, be a currently certified traffic controllers employed by an accredited traffic management company that is a member of TMAA. They must have demonstrated excellent work performance, safety practices, and leadership in the traffic management industry over the past year. Ideally, the award recipient shows a commitment to professional development and acts as a role model for traffic controllers from Indigenous backgrounds.

Rising Star Traffic Controller of the Year

The Rising Star Traffic Controller of the Year Award is an annual award given out by TMAA to recognise an outstanding up-and-coming traffic controller in the industry. The Award will be presented to an individual who has shown exceptional promise and made a significant impact on their team or organisation.

The winner of the Rising Traffic Controller of the Year Award receives a trophy and prize money ($1,500), along with industry-wide recognition. The award celebrate individuals who present the following attributes: ability to work safely and effectively as part of a team, demonstration of early signs of leadership, key contributions made in their role, enthusiasm, reliability and integrity. They will serve as an inspiration to all young up-and-coming traffic controllers in Australia.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Award, the traffic controller must have been employed as a Traffic Controller for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 5 years, be a currently certified traffic controllers employed by an accredited traffic management company that is a member of TMAA. They must demonstrate excellent work performance and safety practices in the traffic management industry over the past 6 months or more.

Traffic Management Designer of the Year

The Traffic Management Designer of the Year Award is an annual award presented by TMAA to recognise excellence in traffic management design. The award honours the traffic management designer who has made the most significant contribution to improving road safety and traffic flow through safe and innovative design.

The winner of the Traffic Management Designer of the Year Award receives a trophy and prize money ($1,000), along with industry-wide recognition.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Traffic Management Designer of the Year Award, the nominee must be a practicing traffic management designer, employed by an accredited traffic management company that is a member of TMAA. The nominee must have completed an exceptional traffic management design project in Australia within the last year. The project must demonstrate excellence in areas such as safety, efficiency, innovation, sustainability, and benefit to the community.

Operation Team Member of the Year

  This Award is proudly sponsored by LGC Traffic Management.

The Traffic Management Operation Team Member of the Year Award is an annual award presented by TMAA to recognise excellence in traffic management operations. The award is open to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service, safety practices, and leadership as part of a traffic management operations team over the past year. Nominees are evaluated based on criteria such as their compliance with regulations and procedures, safety record, reliability, and contributions to improving traffic management practices. 

The winner of the Traffic Operation Team Member of the Year Award receives a trophy and prize money ($1,000), along with industry-wide recognition.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Operation Team Member of the Year Award, the nominee must be employed by a company that is a current member of the TMAA. They must have been working actively on traffic management operations teams throughout the previous financial year. The operations may include activities such as allocation and scheduling of work, planning, OHS, client liaison and management, general administration, fleet and equipment management, etc.

Traffic Management Trainer of the Year

The Traffic Management Trainer of the Year Award is an annual award presented by TMAA to recognise excellence in training and mentoring in the traffic management industry. The award is open to all traffic management trainers in Australia who have made significant contributions to training and developing traffic controllers over the past year. 

The winner of the Traffic Management Trainer of the Year Award will be selected based on their training record, feedback from students, commitment to professional development, and overall contributions to improving training standards in the traffic management industry in Australia. The award provides national recognition of their achievements in training the next generation of qualified traffic controllers.

The winner of the Traffic Management Trainer of the Year Award receives a trophy and prize money ($1,000), along with industry-wide recognition.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Traffic Management Trainer of the Year Award, the nominee must be a practicing traffic management trainer, employed by an organisation that is a member of TMAA. They must have trained a significant number of traffic controller students over the past 12 months and must demonstrate a commitment to delivering high-quality training and imparting best practices in traffic control. They must also show a dedication to mentoring and supporting their students beyond just the training course.

Traffic Management Company of the Year, Tier 1 to Tier 3


The Traffic Management Company of the Year Award Tier 1 to Tier 3 is an annual award presented by TMAA to recognise excellence and outstanding achievement in the traffic management industry. The award is given to the traffic management company that has demonstrated innovation, safety, customer service, and contributions to the overall traffic management profession over the past year.

Winners gain industry recognition and the right to use the relevant Traffic Management Company of the Year logo in their marketing materials for the following 12 months, as well as a 2 pages editorial in Detours in the same year.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Traffic Management Company of the Year Award, companies must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a corporate Ordinary member of the TMAA in good standing
  • Hold a Tier 1 to Tier 3 membership with TMAA
  • Have operations within Australia
  • Demonstrate a commitment to best practice in traffic management through training, safety initiatives, use of technology etc.
  • Show leadership and innovation in the traffic management field
  • Have no major safety breaches, incidents or penalties over the past year.

Traffic Management Company of the Year, Tier 4 to Tier 6


The Traffic Management Company of the Year Award Tier 4 to Tier 6 is an annual award presented by TMAA to recognise excellence and outstanding achievement in the traffic management industry. The award is given to the traffic management company that has demonstrated innovation, safety, customer service, and contributions to the overall traffic management profession over the past year.

Winners gain industry recognition and the right to use the relevant Traffic Management Company of the Year logo in their marketing materials for the following 12 months, as well as a 2 pages editorial in Detours in the same year.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the Traffic Management Company of the Year Award, companies must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a corporate Ordinary member of the TMAA in good standing
  • Hold a Tier 4 to Tier 6 membership with TMAA
  • Have operations within Australia

Traffic Management Project/Event of the Year

The Traffic Management Project/Event of the Year Award is an annual award presented by TMAA to recognise excellence in traffic management practice delivered in the context of high profile projects or events in Australia. The award highlights innovative and effective solutions that improve road safety, congestion, and overall traffic flow.

Submissions are evaluated on criteria such as innovation, effectiveness, complexity, impact, and significance of the delivered project or event.

Winners gain industry recognition and the right to use the relevant Traffic Management Project/Event of the Year logo in their marketing materials for the following 12 months, as well as a 1 page editorial in Detours in the same year.

Eligibility: To be eligible for this Award:

  • The project or event must have been delivered or co-delivered by a member of the TMAA in good standing, that have operations within Australia.
  • The project or event must have taken place in Australia within the last financial year. 
  • The project or event must demonstrate innovative thinking, effective problem-solving, and measurable improvements in road safety, congestion relief, improved traffic flow, reduced environmental impact, or other benefits related to transportation infrastructure and operations.
  • The project or event can be from either the public or private sector but must have been primarily executed in Australia.
