Interview with ABC Radio Hobart

29 Apr 2025 7:27 AM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

Yesterday, TMAA CEO Matthew Bereni had the opportunity to speak with David Reilly from ABC Radio Hobart about the National Traffic Controller Safety Survey, now running for its third consecutive year.

At TMAA, we represent around 200 companies from across the Traffic Control and Traffic Management industry, right across the country. Our core mission is to advocate for our Members, with a strong focus on critical issues like Road Safety. Opportunities to engage with the general public — like this one — are a key part of our plan to raise awareness and drive change on behalf of our Members.

Across Australia, it’s widely accepted that around 20 traffic controllers lose their lives on our roads each year. Sadly, the real number could be even higher — but even 20 deaths are far too many.

A powerful moment from the interview was when Matthew said:
"I often ask people: how would you react if you were told that 20 bus drivers or 20 flight attendants died every year at work? It would be completely unacceptable — and it’s no different for traffic controllers. These are real lives being lost, and we have to act to change that."

Thank you again to David and the ABC Hobart team for helping us raise awareness of this critical issue.
